Richmond Hill, Georgia Area GuideWelcome to Richmond Hill! With a variety of historical and recreational activities available you’ll never run out of ways to keep yourself occupied in Richmond Hill! From exploring historic forts from the Civil War to coastal fishing, there is something for everyone here! HistoryFor hundreds of years the Guale people lived on the shores of the Ogeechee River until Spanish exploration eventually led to English settlement in the area by 1792. The area was prosperous due to plentiful rice crops, but after the Civil War the city quickly became impoverished almost overnight. Our own Fort McAllister (now Georgia State Park) was involved in nine distinct Civil War battles, including the final battle of General Sherman’s March to the Sea in 1864. After the Civil War nearly 80% of the residents here were living in poverty and malaria and moonshine began to take over the city. The economy finally started to turn around when Henry Ford and his wife Clara built a winter retreat on Sterling Bluff and made efforts to end the poverty here over the next 22 years. Henry Ford’s philanthropy saved Fort McAllister and the area was reconstructed and preserved for residents to enjoy as a historical monument. Parks and Recreation
